This is not what it may appear to be at first glance. No, it is definitely not a genuine Fender David Gilmour Custom Shop Replica which costs in excess of three and a half grand. Certainly not one of those! Nope this is my take on that DG tribute model and an idea which used up a stack of bits and pieces that have been cluttering up the place for far too long.

This should have been the follow on project after the Frankenstein Telecaster, way back in 2015. Although it became delayed due to me having, yet another, serious run in with "The Grim Reaper", which put me, and everything else on hold for quite a while. In fact it came a heck of a lot closer to it never happening at all.

Keen eyed Gilmour fans will have noted that none of this is made by Fender, so no fake logos on the headstock. It does have a skunk stripe maple neck which has MOP inlays instead of black dot markers and it's fitted with a set of Wilkinson EZ-Lok Tuners as opposed to the vintage Fender machines.

The Strat style body is an off the shelf replacement third party item made of Ash and finished in black nitro cellulose. The tremolo system is a Wilkinson 5+1 Knife Edge Vibrato WV6SBCR with a regular arm, not the shortened type, as the on real DG replicas

Pick-ups are a very old set of Mighty Mite, which had previously been an upgrade for those used on my ancient Squire Strat. They’re mounted on a single ply black scratch plate and the PUPs are wired up with that extra Gilmour style mini switch for those added tone combinations. All the body cavities for the Switchcraft electrics are copper shielded.

Still need to add some roller string trees and a couple of those very nice elliptical Planet Waves locking strap buttons. I was going to use some Schaller style strap locks, but they were a little bit chunky for this model.

Only just about finished this one, but already considering swapping the pick ups for some Wilkinson Vintage units and more than likely swap the cheapo plastic nut for a slick Graph Tech nut.

Still got a couple or three more bodies and necks and a heap of hardware out in the garage. Maybe should do another project later this year. Could be time to do a “Rat Strat” with that old Squire body. Hey, I just found a pick guard with 3 Artec Hot Rail pickups and a Wilkinson WVP6CR vintage vibrato - hang on, here we go again!

Strobist: Canon EOS 7D with EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM on manual with 2x Yongnuo Speedlites (YN565EX & YN565EXII) at 1/4 power, bounced from white ceiling and fired by Yongnuo YN622C wireless triggers.
Note: This was shot against one of those non woven black back cloths. It was all a bit rushed and didn’t come out as good as I wanted, so a new background was added in Adobe Photoshop. More trickery from my days in advertising. Sorry!
